Vegetable Gardens

Our vegetable gardens are started! Thursday, Dr. Jamie Patton and volunteers from the Agricultural Department brought three types of vegetable gardens and filled them with rock wool and dirt. They gardens are located north of the fenced playground. We are creating a design for planting today and will be planting in them tomorrow.

Congratulations to our two candidates for Horace Mann Student Council Treasurer! Natalie and Trent will be creating posters to campaign and giving a speech on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. The entire school will vote on Wednesday. Good luck to you both! Both of you would make a great treasurer and representative for our class!!

Our first class photo! :)

Guided math groups are in full swing and going really great! Each day includes a 15 minute mini-lesson with Mrs. Sealine, 30 minutes of modeling and practicing with practicum students, 15 minutes of a review station of another math skill, and 10 minutes to finish any independent work. We are doing a lot of math during that time!

Classroom Happenings for the Week of June 6th

The post this week was created by the Reporters and Photographers of the First Grade GURUS. Reports by Natalie and Wyatt and photos by Trent and Jenna. Photo descriptions are by Mrs. Sealine.

We are having the best time in Fourth Grade so far. We are learning about Missouri and in the morning we are doing a Missouri Daily. Our turtle friends brighten our day every day. Lakes in Missouri and turtles. It's a great first week! ~Natalie

This week we planted flowers. This week we got computers and we began working on them during reading and math. ~Wyatt

Using our Netbooks, we created an "All About Me" graphic organizer along with photos of ourselves. Check them out on the bulletin board outside our classroom!

We will complete a "Missouri Daily" each morning as morning work. It is a quick reading exercise and fun fact about Missouri history and info.

We have used our Netbooks for many things this week including the "All About Me" paper and a math measurement activity. We are all learning together how to operate them and use them as a learning tool.

We have been very busy reading Mr. Popper's Penguins in preparation for going to see the movie. We have read three chapters each day and completed three constructed response and three vocabulary words each day as well. Response booklets will come home after we are completely finished with the book.

We took the beginning of the year math test this week. It is a tool to let me know what prior skills everyone has and how I can best help students in areas they need most. These tests will be coming home towards the end of next week.

We wrote many 5-sentence paragraphs this week. We used a classic hamburger to show us the parts we need when we writing paragraphs. The top bun reminds us to restate the question. The meat is the main point of evidence. Two other toppings are the supporting evidence. The bottom bun reminds us to have a closing sentence. And two pickles are words that we can go back and replace with more interesting and creative choices. We will be working on this process all year long to produce some great paragraphs!

All GURUS have been busy with their classroom jobs this week! Our token economy starts on Monday and I know everyone is anxious to earn their first salary. :)

Planting the Butterfly Garden

We had a fantastic time planting the butterfly garden this morning! Along with the help of Mr. Travis Stokes from Landscaping Services, we planted 45 plants! The garden will soon be filled with beautiful colors and hopefully lots of butterflies. There is also a new sidewalk and flag pole there as well. We look forward to seeing the plants blossom and grow!
